Underwear-clad man ignites fireworks

MOUNT ISA, Australia (UPI) -- Authorities in Mount Isa, Australia, said a man was arrested after he allegedly ran down the street in his underwear with firecrackers strapped to his head.

Mount Isa Superintendent Les Hopkins said the 22-year-old man allegedly ran up and down Camooweal Street in the city center wearing only his underwear and a bicycle helmet with detonating firecrackers bound to it, The (Brisbane, Australia) Courier-Mail reported Monday.

"He was running close to one of our main roads, where the big road trains travel," Hopkins said. "It could have been quite tragic."

The man was charged with possession of fireworks and being a public nuisance. He was released after posting bail.

Calif. man accused of driving stolen SUV to court

SAN ANSELMO, Calif. (AP) - Police have charged a man with stealing a Lexus SUV he drove to court the day a jury was to decide whether to convict him in a separate auto theft case.

The man, a 37-year-old San Francisco hairstylist, was arraigned Monday on charges of receiving a stolen vehicle and receiving stolen property after police saw him approach the stolen Lexus in front of the courthouse with its keys in hand.

Police were attracted to the SUV after bystanders noticed several Yorkshire terriers mulling around it.

The man was also charged with animal cruelty and leaving animals in an unattended vehicle.

Meanwhile, he was convicted in the other case. He was charged with possession of a $125,000 Porsche Carrera that had been stolen from a San Anselmo home.

What Wimps!

ORLANDO, Fla. (UPI) -- Several male students at the University of Central Florida say they now empathize with women after going on a march wearing women's' shoes with high heels.

Psychology student Ivan Gonzalez said after the volunteer high-heel walk around campus, he has a better understanding of what life can be like for a woman wearing the treacherous footwear, The Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported.

"I couldn't really walk," the 21-year-old said after Wednesday's event. "I had to hop."

The high-heeled efforts by male students were part of the school's Strike Back Against Dating/Domestic Violence campaign.

The Sentinel said 21-year-old communications major Jenn Edelson donned her high heels to join the men during the march to increase solidarity between the sexes.

"It's their turn today," the volunteer march participant told the newspaper. "It shows they want to understand us better."

Stinky farts may help regulate blood pressure

A smelly rotten-egg gas in farts controls blood pressure in mice, a new study finds.

The unpleasant aroma of the gas, called hydrogen sulfide (H2S), can be a little too familiar, as it is expelled by bacteria living in the human colon and eventually makes its way, well, out.

The new research found that cells lining mice’s blood vessels naturally make the gas and this action can help keep the rodents’ blood pressure low by relaxing the blood vessels to prevent hypertension (high blood pressure). This gas is “no doubt” produced in cells lining human blood vessels too, the researchers said.

Holidays Are Coming!

Man may be reimbursed for money mutilated by mice

JACKSON, Mo. (AP) - A bunch of mice turn out to be no match for the U.S. Mint.

A southeast Missouri man is expected to be reimbursed for about $1,000 in bills that had been munched on by rodents.

He had left the $20 bills in an unzipped vinyl bag on a desk at his home, and it was misplaced during the ice storm last winter and the flooding in March.

He eventually found the bag, and in August took it to First Missouri State Bank in Jackson in hopes of covering his losses.

Bank manager Michelle Johns said Wednesday she and two staffers picked through rodent droppings and bird feathers and reassembled the bills.

"With that mess, I didn't know if we could do anything with it," Johns said.

The U.S. Mint advised Johns that both sets of serial numbers printed on the bills must be complete to get reimbursement.

Johns said mint officials instructed her to send the reassembled bills - and the feces and feathers - to them in Washington, D.C.

The mint will then issue the customer a check for the exact amount the torn money is worth.

Moral: Always zip those zip lock bags!

Way To Close To Home

This story hits close to home. Way too close! This occured on the street where I live, meaning the victim was a neighbor. It is a sad story, not just for the victim, but for the young man that committed the crime and has no idea what hell his life is going to become.
Teen shot to death on Lancaster street
16-year-old suspect taken into custody at apartment
This story appeared in the Antelope Valley Press
Wednesday, October 22, 2008.

By DAISY RATZLAFF
Valley Press Staff Writer
LANCASTER - An 18-year-old who had been walking with a friend was fatally wounded after three other teens confronted the pair on a Lancaster street, deputies said.

Kwame Addison and his friend ran after a fistfight broke out, but one of the trio pulled out a gun and fired, hitting Addison several times, deputies said.

"This ain't right," said Evette Gordan, a neighbor and friend of Addison's family. "He lived in L.A. all his life, and then he moves out to Lancaster and gets shot. And it was in broad daylight, two schools are close by, and it is a busy street. Who goes around carrying a gun and starts shooting people?"

Within minutes of the shooting, Lancaster deputies detained five males who were spotted standing outside a nearby apartment complex and who ran when they saw the deputies. One is expected to be released as he was not involved in the shooting, deputies said.

The suspected gunman is a 16-year-old, deputies said. He suffered a cut to his head and was examined by medical personnel.

At the complex, deputies said they discovered bloody shorts and a shirt.

Deputies said Addison and his friend were walking along the sidewalk on Avenue K near Sixth Street East about 2 p.m. Tuesday when they were approached from behind by three teenagers, officials said.

When a fight broke out, Addison ran, but was shot at least three times, deputies said. He ran across an adjoining field, then collapsed on Sixth Street East, close to his house, sheriff's officials said.

Addison was found by neighbors, who heard the shots and tried to help him before calling his mother, Latonya Jones.

"I was inside the house when I heard the shots," said a neighbor, who asked not to be identified. "He was just laying there, full of blood. It looked pretty bad."

Gordan said Addison's mother came to her home to tell her what happened.

"She was banging on the door and yelling, 'My baby has been shot!' " Gordan said.

Addison, in very critical condition, was flown to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

After the shooting, more than 20 deputies searched the field looking for blood and other evidence, authorities said. The field as well as Sixth Street East were blocked with patrol cars and crime-scene tape. The apartment house in the 43500 block of Kirkland Avenue was also surrounded with crime-scene tape.

Deputies were waiting for a warrant to search the apartment in which the 16-year-old lived.

Gordan said she was shocked by the shooting.

"He was a good kid," Gordan said of Addison. "You know, he got side-tracked for a little bit, but he was back on. … It is unbelievable. Shot around the corner from his home. Are you serious?"

Lots of contests, but are you in?

My friend Pelf is running contests during Breast Cancer Awareness Month and wonders why there are not more people joining in, so I thought I would give her blog a plug and see if it helps :) Here is her post:
You know what’s funny?

I am running a series of simple-to-play and fun contests on the official Pink for October website, but why aren’t YOU participating? We are giving away a lot of attractive prizes throughout the month, plus, it’s for a good cause! Did you know that by participating, you are actually reaching out to your readers and increasing awareness on this deadly but preventable disease? :D

So let me tell you more about the contests that I’m running:

Every Monday and Thursday, I will announce a word, and you are supposed to find or take a picture that best describes that word and blog about it. After that, you should drop by and leave me a comment and link on the post. It’s that easy! On Oct 31st, I will randomly pick a lucky winner from all those who leave me a comment. Which means that the more you play, the higher your chances are of winning something :D

On top of that, there are also those month-long contests. You could either share a breast cancer related true story, or you could design a Pink for October button/banner/badge, and and on Oct 31st, I will randomly pick a winner.

Seriously, MY CONTESTS are definitely easier than those that ask you to write a 5000-word essay about your first love, or why you like to watch rainbows, no?

Come and join us! :vodka:

Are You Prepared?

Everyone that drives, and that is most of us, has to be ready for anything and everything when they are driving down the road. That's just common sense, to be aware of things. But, it is also common sense to know that sooner or later, something can jump up and get you. So, are you prepared?
Like sense, all drivers truly need auto insurance. Depending on which state or country you are in may decide how much is enough. Laws vary from place to place and you should carry whatever your location deems as enough, but having more can also be sensible.
At the Insurance Bureau you can get an online quote that meets your personal needs. Many consumers don't realize that there are more choices to car insurance than the most well known auto insurance companies with clever commercials. Many smaller, auto insurance providers that don't advertise, to cut down on costs, may be able to offer you very cheap auto insurance quotes. InsuranceBureau.com searches car insurance companies, big and small, to find you the most competitive cheap auto insurance quotes available.
And, if you are looking to insure other things, like a home or even yourself, Insurance Bureau can help you with that too. Plus they have blog articles dealing with insurance matters that you can read even if you don't use the site for an insurance quote.
So, no matter what your insurance needs are, you owe it to yourself to check this site out. Click on the link above and get the protection you need.

Lowering The Risks

Continuing with the theme of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I give you an article I found over on breastcancer.org.

Every woman wants to know what she can do to lower her risk of developing breast cancer. If you have no personal history of the disease, you want to do what you can to stay clear of it. And if you have had breast cancer, you never want to get it again. You want to know how to lower your risk of the cancer coming back, and you want to reduce your risk of getting an unrelated new breast cancer.

The best defense against breast cancer is a good offense. There are no perfect solutions, but you can do many things to reduce your risk.
Regular screening tests for breast cancer, such as an annual mammogram and a breast exam during your annual checkup, allow you and your doctor to ensure that your breasts are as healthy as they can be. Screening also increases the likelihood that your doctor will find breast cancer early, when it's most treatable.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. If this doesn't mean anything to you, it should! Breast Cancer kills way too many women each year, and you should be concerned, as it could affect you, or a loved one. So, you should be doing certain things to help yourself or your loved ones.
Here is your tip for the day, to kick off this very important month:

Recommended Frequency for Breast Cancer Screening
All women should start conducting monthly breast self-exams when they are in their 20s. Clinical breast exams are usually performed by your doctor every two to three years while you are in your 20s - 30s, and every year when you are over 40 years of age. (This is assuming you keep your yearly appointments with your OB-GYN for your Pap smears and pelvic exams.) The recommendation for yearly mammograms usually begins when a woman turns 40, largely because younger breasts are usually too dense and fibrous to reveal much during a mammogram. Always follow your doctor's recommendations for regular screening. You should never be too busy to keep an appointment that could save your breasts, or your life. If you are younger than 40, and concerned about a high risk for breast cancer, talk to your doctor about the possibility of alternative breast cancer detection methods, like MRIs, that can take the place of mammograms until 40 years of age.

So, remember...THINK PINK!
