WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (UPI) -- A West Palm beach, Fla., man is suing Verizon Wireless in state court after his family incurred a $9,500 wireless Internet bill in just 11 days.
Steven Sprague, 48, said he was given a free wireless card for his laptop computer when he re-upped his two-year contract with Verizon and the suit claims he was told by a sales agent that the unlimited wireless card usage from his previous plan would carry over, the Palm Beach (Fla.) Post reported.
However, the card was broken by Sprague's wife after only 11 days of use by the couple and their three children, ages 16, 12 and 8. Nonetheless, Sprague said, his bill for the month was nearly $9,500.
"I was ticked off at her for breaking the card, but she was doing me the biggest favor in the world," he said. "At least it stopped there."
Sprague said he took the bill to the Circuit City kiosk where he re-upped his contract and found the plan was not unlimited, but instead included a 49-cent surcharge for each megabyte over 5 gigabytes of monthly use.
"This case is either the classic bait-and-switch situation or, worst case, just a blatant attempt to get people in a contract where they don't know what they are getting into," said Sprague's lawyer, Philip Valente Jr.

Frozen 'hands' prove to be animal gonads
FORT WORTH, Texas (UPI) -- The new owner of a Texas apartment called police when he found what appeared to be human hands in the freezer -- only to learn they were animal testicles.
Patrick McCusker of Fort Worth stumbled across the items Friday while he was cleaning out the freezer, The Dallas Morning News reported.
Roger Metcalf of the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office said the objects did indeed look like hands, especially since they had been placed inside a plastic surgeon's glove.
"You couldn't tell what they were until you got the things open," he said.
Metcalf said the objects are now outside the Medical Examiner's jurisdiction. The office will not determine what type of animal the testicles belonged to.
A maintenance man told the newspaper the previous owners of the apartment once killed a wild pig.

Women calm attacker with beer
LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- A 71-year-old Los Angeles woman said she was able to stop an attacker in her home from assaulting her daughter by offering him beer.
Linda Dodson, 45, said a large man entered her room and attacked her at 3:37 a.m. Monday while her mother was sleeping in the next room, KTLA-TV, Los Angeles, reported.
"He had his big hands ... on my throat, my mouth and my nose and I'm flopping ... when he released his hand for a second, I just let out this blood-scorching scream," Dodson said.
Dodson's mother said she came into her daughter's room to investigate the scream and jumped onto the attacker's back. However, she said she decided to switch tactics after the attacker threw her against a wall and grabbed her face so hard the lenses popped out of her glasses.
"I just looked at him because I could tell he had been drinking and I said, 'I don't know about you, but I could use a beer, how about you?'" she said. "And he said yes."
The mother and daughter took the suspect into their living room and gave him a beer, which seemed to calm him. Linda Dodson said she phoned 911 after excusing herself to go to the bathroom and police arrived soon after.
Louie Herrera, a convicted child molester, was arrested on suspicion of residential burglary, false imprisonment, and resisting arrest.

Police: Teen burglar ordered porn
PALM BAY, Fla. (UPI) -- Police in Palm Bay, Fla., have arrested a 14-year-old boy who allegedly broke into a home and ordered more than $100 worth of porn movies on a TV.
Officers said the boy was charged with occupied burglary and grand theft after he allegedly entered a family's home and used its TV account to order about $129 worth of pornographic films, WKMG-TV, Orlando, Fla., reported.
Police said the family had arrived home from shopping to find the alleged perpetrator watching their television.
The teenager has previously been arrested on felony charges, police said.

$4 million ATM error leads teen to s
TELFORD, England (UPI) -- A Telford, England, woman said her 16-year-old son ended up in debt after an ATM fluke indicated he had $4 million in his bank account.
Joanne Bowen said her son, William, checked his account balance at a Lloyds TSB branch and saw the $4 million sum, The Daily Mail reported Tuesday.
"He had several friends with him and they confirmed the figure," Bowen said. "A couple of adults also saw it and one of them reported it to a cashier later in the day."
She said he withdrew $600 from the account and immediately spent the funds on some new clothes and an iPod.
Bowen said she went to the bank and discovered the account was showing up as overdrawn by $600.
"(The bank manager) said at first it could not be possible. But when he saw the records he said he could not explain it and it must have been a fluke with the ATM," she said.
She said William plans to pay the money back.
Lloyds TSB said the incident is being investigated.

In Ohio they take grass-cutting very seriously. So seriously in fact that homeowners who don’t mow their lawns face a stiff fine, even jail time in some cases.
The city council has decided to get tougher by increasing the maximum fine for failing to cut the grass from $150 to $250. And they’ve also added up to 30 days behind bars if a violator is particularly bad. Mayor William Healy says it’s the type of action needed “in order to clean up our neighbourhoods and our city.”

New York's oldest person turns 113
SNYDER, N.Y. (UPI) -- Pat Thomas, New York state's oldest resident, turned 113 Sunday -- and by the way, she has a new hobby, painting.
Thomas, born in 1895, is the sixth-oldest person in the United States and the eighth-oldest in the world, The Buffalo (N.Y.) News reported, citing the Verified Living List of the Gerontology Research Group.
An avid gardener, she has cultivated a reputation as "The Plant Lady," but took up painting after she could no longer garden, the newspaper said.
Thomas -- whose first name is Olivia -- was born in Iowa and grew up in Illinois. She has lived in Snyder, a Buffalo suburb, since 1946, when she moved there with her husband Frederick, an engineering professor at the University of Buffalo.
She has been recognized for volunteering more than 9,000 hours at what was formerly known as the Veterans Administration Hospital, where she grew flowers in a greenhouse for patients and established a garden therapy program.
She remains "alert and talkative," the News reported, but she doesn't have much to say about her remarkable longevity.
"I don't like to think about it," she told the newspaper.
Her husband died in 1982 and the couple had no children.
