Free?

If you are a regular reader of this blog then you know that little attracts my attention faster than the word "free". Free is always something good to me, especially if it is free as in free shipping.
I do a few PTC sites these days and one of the ads I am constantly looking at is for something called That Free Thing. Of course the word free caught my attention right away! Unfortunately, this is more inclined to be related to the old adage there is no such thing as a free lunch.
That Free Thing claims that you will get a lot of things for free, clothing, electronics, food, lots of stuff. I liked that part. What I did not like was the price.
Joining the program costs about twenty bucks. That's not free. Then of course is the monthly charge of around ten dollars. That isn't free either.
I think I am better off just taking the $100-plus that I would spend in a year on That Free Thing and just go buy myself something I want. And with luck I will get it with free delivery!

Barcodes

Seems like no matter where you go or what you do you are bound to run into a barcode scanner. Heck, I got a mail the other day from my retirement folks so that I can vote on the Board of Trustees and the return envelope says that the envelope will be scanned with a barcode machine to ensure that it really is me.
Stores have been using barcode scanners for years now. this not only helps them keep track of their inventory but also helps the cash register give the customer the correct price. Inventory control is important, helps the manager know when to re-order items. the correct price is a must, no one wants an unhappy customer.
I like these scanners. When I am in a large store like Walmart I can find one of these and scan an item to see if I can afford it. Sure beats being embarrassed at the checkout line!
If you have any sort of business you need to invest in one or more of these machines. They will help you keep track of what items have sold, what is popular as well as keeping track of your pricing. And the best part is that these scanners are affordable for just about every business, irregardless of size. Got a business? Then check into one of these scanners now!

Finally!

When I got pnuemonia back in November and went to hospital with no insurance a young lady came to visit me to tell me I needed to apply for a program called Medi-Cal. Being poor and without insurance I agreed. What's the worst that could happen?
Finally, today, almost 5 months later I got a letter from the Medi-Cal folks. Looks like they have approved my case. Great news since, having been to the hospital twice in that time I owe them around forty thousand dollars.
I am very happy to finally get some relief, not just from those bills, but in knowing that, once I get a card and everything I can go visit a doctor if I need to.
I apologize for not updating this blog the past week or so. I have been extremely busy over on the game site. the boss has taken a leave of absence and left me in charge of the 12 hours of night time moderators. It has been hectic at best.

Long Week

It is going to be a long week for me. One of the Mods is going away for the week to visit a daughter and I am moving up one shift to cover hers. Not a bad thing really, but the hours will make it seem worse than it really is.
I usually am in the game lobby from 9 p.m. to midnight my time but this week I will be there from midnight to 3 a.m. my time. This time of the day is generally dead in the lobby so it might be hard for me to keep myself entertained and alert. I will do my best though as I don't want to be shirking my mod duties.

Video Conference

Once a month all of the Moderators on the game site get together online to talk about what is going on or what will be happening soon. We do this on Skype so that we can hear each other rather than labor over a multitude of text lines. This is important because, as humans, we all talk at the same time seems like and some of us talk really quickly.
One of the things that has been tossed around at these monthly meetings is how cool it would be if, instead of voice chat on Skype, we used video conferencing. This would allow us to not only chat like we do now but would also allow us to see exactly who is talking. Now, that would be nice to see.
It also would allow us to see just what these other moderators look like since some of them do not use their personal photos as avatars so you really don't know what they actually look like. I do use a personal photo so I know they all know how I look and I can only hope that they were not scared when they first saw it.
Video conferencing for us would be fun. For a business group it would be more serious but certainly something worthwhile. Talking on a phone is okay, but with video conferencing you could not only hear what the other person is trying to convey but you could also see the look on their face. So, if you thought they sounded excited you could see that clearly on their face and, hopefully, that excitement would rub off onto you and all the others in the video conference.
Video conferences can, I believe, be a true bonus for businesses, especially if your business is scattered around the globe. The only hard part would be setting a time when everyone is available. We have that problem as two of our moderators reside in Australia and their hours and days are very different than those of us that live in the United States. We manage to find a time that is fairly suitable for all and I'm certain that your business could do likewise.
Need to communicate with people? Then check out the services available on the website and see what video conferencing has to offer you and your business.

Faster Means Slow

One of the games I play on Facebook has had its share of bugs and glitches. They seemed to have everything fixed up for a long period of time and that was great. Now, whenever you go to start the thing the page says it is now faster than ever because they have listened to the players. Sounds good.
The game now loads slower than ever, like it did at the beginning of my playing it. Sometimes the characters are invisible or they walk backwards. Sometimes the food that I have been cooking is not there! Makes it hard to play the game this way.
Faster now means slower I guess in the tech world. Kind of like new and improved products that seem the same as they were in the first place.
I do hope that the folks at Zynga get it straightened out. I like playing that game but I don't want to spend that much time waiting for everything to load properly.
Do me a favor, tech people...don't improve things. Listen to the old adage, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
