What's The Point?

Every night my daughter tells either myself or her mother "good night, I'm going to bed because I am very tired." Within minutes, the light is on or the television set or she is in the kitchen looking for something to eat or drink. Several hours later she is still awake, determined not to go to sleep, even though it was her idea in the first place.
What is the point of saying good night if you have no intentions of going to bed or sleep? I'd be willing to bet that if she was told to stay awake she'd be asleep in minutes.
When she did this silliness as a child, it was defiance and rebelliousness, pure and simple. Now she is nineteen and has no need to rebel.
So, what is the point? Is this her generation saying I just don't care about anything? Is this just her being a pain in the butt? Matters not as its her life, she can waste it all she likes at this point in time.
She is planning on getting into better shape so that she can join the Army. I wish her the best of luck there, since the Army is not all that nocturnal an organization. They are not going to care that she forced herself to stay awake until 3 a.m. or later. They are just going to force her out of bed and yell orders at her all day long.
Maybe, after the Army gets through with her she'll sleep at night. Until then, what's the point of saying that you're tired and going to bed and sleep? LOL
